Elafonisi, a tropical peninsula situated 76km southwest of Chania in the most southwest edge of Crete. Elafonisi, due to its landscape, looks like a separate island. It is a protected area of “Natura 2000”, as it is abounded in dunes, desert lilies, and cedars. In addition, this is where the sea turtles Careta-Careta and many other different rare species nestle. It is prohibited by law to cut any kind of flora or even take a jar of sand with you.
At the peninsula of Elafonisi, lots of private gorgeous bays are formed with white sand and turquoise water, which remind the landscape of the Caribbean Sea. The sand in many places is coloured pink by the millions crushed shell. There is part that the peninsula is narrower where the water is not over 1m deep and it forms a lagoon ideal for small children.
The east side of the beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and it is where most of the people spend the day. On the contrary, the beaches after the island are less crowded and more beautiful.
